HPLC-HB Electrophoresis- Symptoms, Precautions, Treatment
What is HPLC -HB Electrophoresis?
- HPLC -HB Electrophoresis:
Haemoglobin Electrophoresis and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography
or Capillary Electrophoresis - HB Electrophoresis: Haemoglobin Electrophoresis
- HB: Haemoglobin
Haemoglobin, as we all know it, is the protein that is found in our red blood cells; its function is the transportation of oxygen to the organs and tissues of the body.
The HB Electrophoresis test is a blood test that is used to measure the levels of the haemoglobin as well as abnormalities regarding the types of haemoglobin whereas the HPLC -HB Electrophoresis is used to find out the various types of haemoglobin that are present in the blood. The HPLC -HB Electrophoresis is basically a quantitative analysis of the blood unlike the HB Electrophoresis which is the qualitative analysis.
When to Get the Test? Symptoms:
- Jaundice which presents itself through the yellowing of the skin and whitening of the eyes
- Fatigue
- Sickle cell disease that can present itself through severe pain
- In children, it can present itself through growth issues

Precautions:
- Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease cannot be prevented but there are many measures to manage the symptoms and avoid complications of the disease.
- In case of Thalassemia, avoid a diet with high iron content as it can interfere with the blood transfusion.
- In case of Sickle Cell Disease, one can manage it by taking folic acid supplements, mild exercise, no smoking, enough water, basically have a healthy lifestyle and do as the doctors prescribe.
